Sharing the Joy of Helping

The Chief Technical Advisor, Naseeb Dajani, of the Foundation shares with our donors and collaborators, some of his touching and inspiring experiences during a recent mission visit to GHF projects.

  1. In a village where GHF is collaborating I saw a young boy, seven or eight years old, who was literally jumping for joy. I asked him why he was so happy. The boy replied "I have been chosen by my village to go to school".
  1. In a very poor village, in a pre-schooling class consisting of children ages 4 and 5 years, I observed that the teacher was teaching them arithmetic, in groups of three. I asked the teacher about her teaching method. She explained that she was using arithmetic to teach the concepts of giving and sharing. She was teaching them first subtraction (giving) and division (sharing). Later on, she would teach addition and multiplication.
  1. Whilst staying in a hotel in Mumbai, I mentioned to the manager that I was working for GHF on projects to improve and regenerate the environment. This is an environmental friendly hotel called The Orchid, an ecotel. I was given a special rate for my stay, and the manager subsequently arranged for me to give a lecture to the directors, staff and some guests of the hotel (some 40 people) on Concepts, Principles and Applications of Sustainable Development. As a result, the management now plans to help support an environmental project in Mumbai.

And another story which illustrates our attitude to helping:

An old man was walking along the beach at dawn.  He saw a young girl who was picking up starfish which were lying in the sand at the water's edge and was throwing them back into the sea.  The old man approached her and asked the reason why she was doing that.

"If the starfish remain in the sand until sunrise, they will die", she replied

"But the beach extends for several kilometres and there are too many starfish", observed the old man. "You can not save all of them, so, why waste your time saving any?  Does it make any difference?"

The young girl looked at the starfish in her hand and threw it into the sea.

"It made a difference for this one", she replied.

The Global Harmony Foundation makes a difference too.
