Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominican Republic, has many poor sectors where
schools are lacking and children are left without schooling to lead a precarious life. The "Hogar-Escuela Maria Milagrosa" was set up to remedy this acute problem in one of the poorest parts of the city. This is an
educational and training centre providing sheltering and schooling for 96 street children whose ages range from 5 to 14. There are, however, 45 children of different ages on the waiting list. GHF has been approached
to assist in providing funding and technical support.
We aim to provide technical assistance and funding support in order to upgrade this
centre. This is accomplished through staff training and curriculum development, as well as the building and furnishing of the needed annexes for classrooms and workshops.
