Reaching the Unreachable in the Poorest Parts of the World

Alternative Health Education Project, Feira de Santana, Bahia, Brazil

The Project: This pilot project is located in Campo Limpo and George Americo, in the Northeast region of Brazil. These are the two poorest suburbs of Feira de Santana (population half a million) and serve 40'000 people.

We have succeeded in building a multi-national centre on a piece of land donated by the local community. This centre provides holistic programs dealing with the major problems of the poor, such as health, hygiene, malnutrition, high infant mortality, illiteracy and unemployment.

The Project consists of the following:

• Preventative and curative health care programs
• Nutrition and hygiene practices
• Education and vocational training for children and women
• Human, social and environmental development training

GHF will provide technical assistance, training and partial funding until 2013.

To complete the furnishing of the centre, we need Sfr.18'000

For the years 2008 to 2009 we need a total of Sfr.15'000

After 2009 a study will be conducted to determine what is needed in order for the centre to achieve self-sufficiency.
