The New Project: A pre-schooling and first grade school project located in the fishing village of Trindade, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Trindade is a poor village of approximately four hundred inhabitants who live almost exclusively from fishing.
The Original Project:
This was a primary school which was overcrowded As a result of an evaluation study by the local authorities, a decision was taken to relocate the primary section to another to a neighbouring town. What remained became pre-schooling with first grade for thirty two children.
GHF was again approached by the village leaders and the school staff to continue their support and technical assistance.
The Objectives of GHF: To assist, with the collaboration of the community
members, in the following:
- To upgrade the facilities and furniture of the school
- To improve the installations, especially the kitchen and playground.
- To improve the new school curriculum and to train the staff.
- To carry out relevant training and orientation workshops with the children parents and other village members.
GHF Assistance to this project is envisaged to continue until 2008.
The amount needed annually is CHF 15'000.
Note: It is GHF policy not to pay recurring costs as this renders the project dependent on GHF support, whereas our aim is to help the project become self-sustainable. The local community and authorities will participate in funding and assisting this school, especially for the recurring costs such as teachers salaries, maintenance costs and
furniture building.
