The New Project: This project is located in the poorest communities of Paraty..These are inhabited by immigrants from the rural areas who came seeking work and survival. They
are now approximately forty thousand people, mostly of Caiçara origin, and presently some work as fishermen, and labourers.
The main problems encountered are:
A. Illiteracy and school desertion.
B. Unemployment.
C. Undernourishment and ill-health.
II. The Project consists of the following educational program's:
A. Remedial schooling for the children.
B. Revival of Caiçara culture for the community.
C. Health, Nutrition and Hygiene care.
The aims of the Project are:
1. To motivate and reinforce the children's schooling enabling them to succeed in achieving formal basic education.
2. To provide the children and their parents with knowledge in hygiene, health and nutrition care.
3. To enhance the participants' self-esteem and self-reliance.
III. The basic beneficiary participants of this Project comprise the following:
A. Forty five school children whose ages range from 8 to 12 years.
B. The children's parents and some members of the community totaling to 90 people.
IV. The needs of the Project are:
A. The accommodation of the present house into a school and community center. This requires the construction and furnishing of two additional classrooms, a multifunctional hall, a
kitchen and a playground.
B. Technical assistance in remedial education and community development.
GHF is providing the relevant technical assistance and staff training, as well as partial funding until 2011.
The total amount needed for 2008 and 2009 is Swiss Francs 47,000.00 ( Forty-seven thousand Swiss Francs).
